When it comes to home lotteries, most people are in it for the BIG WIN hoping to cash in on big prizes like the 2017 Foothills Hospital Home Lottery $2.4 million grand prize showhome. But, for Calgary Health Trust, home lotteries mean a big win for all patients who require health care in Calgary.
Patients like Benjamin.
When Sandra’s water broke at just 17 weeks, she and her husband, Michael, were told there was less than a one per cent chance that their baby would survive. At 27 weeks, Benjamin made a speedy entrance into the world. He wasn’t breathing and was immediately taken to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Doctors were very concerned about Benjamin’s lung development, having been without amniotic fluid in utero for almost 10 weeks. Born at just 2 lbs. 8 oz., Benjamin was hooked up to machines to help him breathe and grow, spending more than 83 days closely monitored under the most critical level of care by the team at Foothills NICU.
“He stayed in an incubator for a while and we could only very gently touch him. His skin was so fragile,” explained Michael. When the day finally came for Michael and Sandra to hold their baby boy they were overwhelmed. “You can’t put into words the feeling of what it is like to hold your son after that long, especially when you didn’t know if he would survive.”
Today, four-year-old Benjamin is the happiest and most empathetic boy who always has a comforting hug and kind words for a friend.
“We are forever grateful for all the care provided by the doctors, nurses, technicians and staff,” said Michael and Sandra.
The two lotteries, Foothills Hospital Home Lottery and the Hospital Home Lottery are important fundraising cornerstones for Calgary Health Trust. They generate large ticket sales each year, with many Albertans eager to purchase tickets in support of advancing programs and technology at Foothills Medical Centre (FMC), Rockyview General Hospital (RGH) and Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC).
“We are very proud to have been the first charity in Alberta to present the home lottery concept. Since 1993 we have had a lot of fun awarding the grand prize showhomes, and along the journey our lotteries have raised more than $95 million in net proceeds—supporting many initiatives right here in our own back yard,” said Jill Olynyk, CEO Calgary Health Trust.
This year’s Foothills Hospital Home Lottery launched February 8, 2017. More than 4,600 prizes will be awarded, including luxury vehicles, vacations, season tickets, leisure packages and more.
Tickets are $100 each, 3-pack for $250, 5-pack for $375, and 8-pack for $500. If you would like to purchase tickets for the Foothills Hospital Home Lottery Visit www.FoothillsHospitalHomeLottery.com
