Reaching the Summit for Mental Health and Wellness

Calgary Health Trust and the PPCLI Foundation have partnered on an exciting opportunity in support of mental health and wellness in our communities. On June 24, 2017 we are climbing for a cause either summiting Mount Burke [We have adjusted the climb to take account of washouts on the Lost Creek Trail and heavy snowpack – details about Mount Burke can be downloaded here] or hiking on a 5 km family hike or on a more difficult 12 km hike in the area of the Etherington Creek Trail, with the option of camping as well!

By participating in this event you will be helping raise funds for operational stress injury (OSI), which is any ongoing psychological difficulty that has arisen from duties performed during service.

Reaching the Summit
Reaching the Summit - Climbing Buller Mountain
Reaching the Summit - Hikers

We are hiking for those men and women who experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It's estimated that 75 -90 per cent of physician visits by military personnel are due to mental health challenges. Surpassed only by severe injuries, mental health treatment is the highest hospital care expenditure in Canada.  We know that for every $1 spent in treating mental health and addictions saves $7 in further health costs.

It’s also your chance to join our special climbers Laurie Skreslet and Dave Rodney on this incredible adventure. In 1982, Laurie became the first Canadian to summit Mount Everest. MLA Dave Rodney is the first Canadian to summit Mount Everest two times. On 24 June, they will each lead a team of climbers to the summit of Mount Farquhar (Elevation 2,879 metres). For more information about the event and about Laurie Skreslet and Dave Rodney please click here.

Be a part of this adventure and help to make a difference by registering to climb/hike, or sponsoring this event. We need your support! Click here for more information about sponsorship opportunities.

Participants can choose to:

1. Climb to the summit of Mount Burke (each participant is asked to obtain a minimum of $1,000 in pledges)
2. Hike on a 5km family hike or on a more difficult 12km hike on the Etherington  Creek Trail (each participant is asked to attempt to obtain at least $300 in pledges from colleagues, family and friends)

If you wish to register for camping in the Etherington Creek Group Campsite on both Friday and Saturday nights please note, that availability is limited to eight sites on a strictly first-come, first-served basis. Sites are also available on-line in the Etherington Creek Campsite as indicated in the Instructions for Participant and Volunteers (click here for a copy).
